Tommy Bahama defines elegant tropical living with men's and women's fashions, denim, swimwear, accessories and a complete home furnishings collection. Tommy Bahama, the purveyor of island lifestyles, is looking for a qualified Assistant Designer to join our Women’s Design team.
MISSION
To assist the women’s design team to develop and produce high quality apparel each season.
KEY RESULTS AREAS
Production
• Prepares wall and bible pictures each session.
• Sets up wall upon designers return to Hong Kong.
• Assist designers in technical sketching. Assign reference numbers for designs and set up files.
• Order new colors as necessary.
• Set up specs as directed. Grade out specs accordingly, or as directed.
• Prepares fabric swatch cards as needed.
• Prepares FedEx packages for shipping, and disperses contents of incoming FedEx packages to appropriate designers on a daily basis.
• Creates development cards to send to Hong Kong that articulate colors, specifications, fabrics, and other information so that samples can be created.
• Updates specs, technical sketches and sample orders as needed.
Sample Ordering
• Specs and checks details on approval samples, production samples, and shipment samples.
• Reviews with designer and/or design team when necessary.
• Checks bulk fabrics and trims against approved standards.
• Reviews with designer and makes suggestions based on production timing and quantities.
• Communicates feedback to Hong Kong and the warehouse.
• Files and tracks all sample order information. Keeps sample order books organized and neat.
• Sets up and keeps samples in an organized manner.
• Performs spot checks on production samples to maintain quality control.
Design Contribution
• Organizes and maintains fabric library/sample files.
• Assists in presentation boards as needed. Ensures that materials are on hand for boards at all times.
• Participates in design conversations about styling, fabric, colors, etc. to enhance learning and offer opinions.
• Sends out color standards to Hong Kong and others as needed.
Customer Knowledge/Learning
• Spends time researching buying trends of Tommy Bahama customers to become better familiar with the product users, and to enhance design capabilities.
• Follows up on details with merchandising, sales, or other departments where questions need to be answered by the design team.
• Assists team with sales meeting presentations through effective logistics, meeting planning, and follow-through skills.
Team
• Works with team of designers and design assistants to ensure cohesive line, and best quality product available.
• Resolves conflict effectively.
• Recognizes team members as valuable contributors and listens to their feedback.
Process Improvement
• Seeks new ways to make design processes more efficient and shares ideas with design team.
• Works as efficiently as possible, while also focusing on quality results for the line.
EXPERIENCE, TALENT AND EDUCATION
• 2-4 year degree in apparel design, fashion design, graphic design or equivalent experience (1-2 years work experience in the apparel industry) is highly desirable.
• Computer graphics experience with knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator helpful, or the ability to learn.
• Familiarity with the apparel design or garment production process from concept to product.
Knowledge and Attributes

• Ability to follow through on multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Time management skills.
• Organization skills. Ability to work under tight timelines while managing multiple priorities.

• Basic design skills including garment construction, specifications, and technical sketches.
• Must be detail oriented and pay close attention to quality.
• Good communication skills.
• Some fashion sense required.
